Afterwards they dozed in a state of lazy disarray, oblivious to the sun going down in a fiery ball and the air becoming slightly cooler as a breeze sprang up from over the harbour.
Luisa could hear distant sounds from inside the house and outside as traffic passed by their window.
Medjid rolled over on his stomach and looked at her.
âLuisa, although the Sultan has forgiven me, I am still in disgrace.â
His dark brown eyes were very serious, and she lifted her hand and ran her fingertips down his cheek, feeling the stubble of his beard as they played about his chin, before sliding down to the hollow of his throat.
He rolled over on his back, and stared at the ceiling, his face pensive.
Luisa moved over, so his arm encircled her, and began playing with the hair on his chest.
âWhat does that mean, then?â she enquired, looking at him.
âIt means, my little pigeon, that I must report to my ship tomorrow, and sail the following day to prove my devotion to the Sultan, and bring him spoils for his treasury.â
Luisa sat up with a gasp.
âSail away⦠so soon!â
âBut of course, habibi. I have been unemployed for too long, and now I must return to the service and prove myself worthy of my freedom.â
âBy acts of piracy?â The words came out with a bitterness that Luisa hadnât intended.
He shrugged. âCall it what you will, but enemies of the Highest of the High must be destroyed, and whatever we take in the way of plunder can only benefit our own people here.â
âAnd what if you are killed?â Fear tore at her heart. âIf anything should happen to youâ¦â
Once more he drew her into his arms. âI shall take great care that nothing happens to me so I can return to you as quickly as I can, and you will be proud of me and the Sultan pleased with me.â His eyes were shining in anticipation of the prizes and honour to be won.
âOh, Medjid,â and she kissed him, thinking how ridiculously young and excited he looked, like a little boy about to set off on a great adventure.
The danger of him being killed or maimed, was far greater than he seemed to realise, and yet he was not a fool. But the very thought of him losing a leg, or an arm, or blindedâ¦
No, she recoiled at the very idea, running her hand down his flat chest; his own hand came on top of hers and put it where he wanted and they made love again, slowly and yearningly. To Luisa, he seemed to fill her completely, as if to prove to her his strength and dominance, and he did not withdraw from her as was his wont, but stayed joined to her to the very end, until finally he rolled away from her and lay beside her, his heart racing, eyes closed.
âMy dear lord,â she covered his face with butterfly kisses, âI did not know it was possible to love someone as much as I have come to love you.
